About the Race

This EQUI-KIDS event features three cross country races located at Bells Mill Park in Chesapeake, Virginia. The races are chip timed by KaleRunning.com. It features a uniquerace: the 3K Run With the Hounds. In this race you can bring your canine running partner and compete against many other dogs and their handlers.

The EQUI-KIDS 5K Trot, 1 Mile Gallop, and 3K Run With the Hounds supports the EQUI-KIDS Therapeutic Riding Program. EQUI-KIDS was established in 1989 to offer equine assisted activities to individuals with mental and physical disabling conditions such as Down syndrome, Cerebral Palsy and Learning Disabilities. Barbara S. Ford founded the program with only one pony and six riders. Ms. Ford recognized that through equine activities, the challenged rider could develop self-awareness, self-confidence and improve their concentration. Therapeutic riding also offers physical benefits such as muscle strengthening and stretching and increases fine motor skills. The horse provides the challenged rider with a feeling of freedom and independence that may be limited in their everyday life.
